Where you live matters more than you think.
Sun, sea, mold, and the places your body heals faster or slower, and why.
You go back to your home country and your skin calms within days. You travel and notice dramatic improvement almost immediately. You return home and within a week you are spiralling again. Very often the answer is more specific, and more actionable, than stress or routine change.
Sun, sea, and vitamin D
If you have noticed your skin significantly improve on a sunny holiday, you are not imagining it. Vitamin D is not just a vitamin. It is a steroid hormone that directly regulates immune function, reduces inflammatory cytokine production, and supports the integrity of the skin barrier. Vitamin D deficiency is almost universal in people with TSW, particularly those in northern climates or those who have been covering their skin.
Moving to or spending extended time in a sunny country near the sea can produce genuine, measurable skin improvement. The combination of sunlight, sea air, lower stress, and reduced indoor exposure is real medicine.
One caveat: hot, humid environments can worsen fungal overgrowth and, critically, humid living spaces are more likely to harbour mold. If you move somewhere warm and feel worse rather than better, look at your living space before concluding that climate does not help you.
Mold: the most underdiagnosed driver
Mold illness is not a fringe diagnosis. Mycotoxins are potent immunotoxins and mitochondrial toxins. They disrupt the innate immune response, suppress NK cell activity, drive chronic inflammation, impair bile production, congest the liver, and directly damage the gut lining. They also suppress the body's ability to clear other pathogens.
In my own case, we had black mold in the AC unit of our apartment in Dubai. I was attributing my worsening skin to the stress of a new country, a new baby, a startup that was failing. My daughter's behaviour changed. I assumed it was developmental phases. It was only when I physically saw mold coming out of the AC that we acted. By then the damage was done. It took years to fully clear.
You cannot heal from mold illness while you are being actively exposed. This is the one absolute rule.
